Whole-genome SNP Parentage Verification Certificates are available to U.S.-based genomic nominators, breed associations, and the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB).
Parentage Verification
CDCB offers whole-genome SNP Parentage Verification Certificates through ICAR-certified standards.
CDCB performs SNP-based parentage verification and discovery services routinely at the reception of every genotype. Although feedback is sent to the nominator, this information is primarily used for validation of the information received or to correct/complete the pedigree of animals with the objectives of providing a more accurate genetic evaluation.
In March 2019, CDCB was certified by the International Committee on Animal Recording (ICAR) as a SNP-based parentage verification center, also known as a DNA Data Interpretation Center. ICAR certification for parentage validation centers is recognized as the international standard, and it authorizes CDCB to issue parentage analysis certificates bearing the ICAR certification logo.
Since then, countries have gradually transitioned from microsatellites/SSR/STR-based parentage certificates to SNP-based approaches. A CDCB-led initiative resulted in an update to the ICAR guidelines in May 2026 to extend parentage certification to whole-genome SNP data. These updated guidelines specify that whole-genome SNP data should be preferred when it exists. Learn more about this change.
As of September 2026, CDCB will offer whole-genome SNP Parentage Verification Certificates utilizing these updated standards. CDCB maintains its status as a certified DNA Data Interpretation Center. These certificates can be used to meet export requirements for U.S. animals into global markets.
Via SFTP, users submit a file containing the parentage information required for the analysis. Each row of the submitted file must include the 17-character ID of the target animal as well as the corresponding sire and dam IDs. To receive an assessment, SNP genotype data of the target animal must already be loaded in the National Cooperator Database prior to submission.
Currently, parentage verification and certification services are provided to eligible collaborators at no additional cost. The parentage certificate issued by CDCB can be printed and/or shared to any third party without CDCB consent.
However, collaborators are not entitled to re-sell certificates, modify them in part or in full, or extract part of the information contained for any other purpose without written consent from CDCB.
